ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) was the first steam-operated railway in the United States, to be chartered as a common carrier of freight and passengers in 1827. This particular route of B&O was the Baltimore & Ohio Richwood Branch, which extended over a hundred miles from Clarksburg to Richwood, completed in 1901. Richwood, unsurprisingly named for its abundance of timber, boomed by the 1930s as a thriving industrial town; home to then the world's largest clothespin factory as well as industry ranging from glassmaking to leather sole plants. The railway was abandoned by the 1980s. – Jordan J. Lloyd
