ABOUT THIS IMAGE

"Nina Simone had a notable relationship with the Netherlands during the course of her long career. During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, Simone switched her record distribution to the Dutch owned Philips Records for a period of three years. A recording of Simone performing at the Mickery Theatre in Loenersloot with Lisle Atkinson on bass, Rudy Stevenson on guitar and Bobby Hamilton on drums (shortly after this portrait was taken) can be found online. In the late 1980s, Simone relocated to Nijmegen in the Netherlands, living a somewhat happy (and relatively) anonymous existence with her carer Jackie Hammond, before then moving to Amsterdam. Simone stayed in the Netherlands for five years before permanently settling in France."
