Prints by Chris Whitehouse
Chris is an expatriate American who has spent his adult life in the Far East. His 40-year love of old photographs and their restoration began with old family photos in the darkroom at university. Chris’ clients include the Chicago White Sox, the Hall of Fame’s Memory & Dreams Magazine, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, Baseball Digest Magazine, the Ty Cobb Museum, the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum, the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Hong Kong Maritime Museum. Chris has illustrated his first major publication A Stitch in Time, covering the complete history of the Boston Red Sox. It will be published by Assouline later in 2020. Specializing in the restoration and colorization of early 20th century American sports, Chris finds the colour of the uniforms and pageantry of the parks to be a great contrast to the dullness of the clothing of the fans and the smoke-filled skies of the era. Chris is also intent on bringing back to life the stunning cityscapes of 19th century Hong Kong, his home for many years. There is a special feeling he gets walking through utterly made-over locations and to see in his mind’s eye the buildings and people that once stood there. Chris also works on 19th century images of old Siam, a country for which black & white photography could never do justice. He now resides in the ancient Thai capital of Ayutthaya.
