ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH

Taken May 28th, 1906. San Francisco, California, United States
(Library of Congress)

"On the 18th April, 1906 at 5:12am, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 virtually destroyed San Francisco. There’s many things that make this building completely extraordinary; from the ruins of San Francisco itself down to remarkable clarity and detail in the panorama. You can even see individual crates being unloaded from the still functioning docks in the foreground, through to what we think are civil war era tents used to temporarily house people. Geo. R. Lawrence used a ‘captive airship’ to take this aerial panorama in an early example of drone photography, if you swapped out the drone for a specially rigged kite. Photographs went for $125, which in today’s money would be $3500. This is still the longest time it’s ever taken me to work on a photograph – literally, a month. The entire process by week 3 became very repetitive, but it was totally worth it because of the incredible amount of detail. There are nearly 200 references from contemporaneous photography, illustrations and even insurance maps to make sure that this photograph was as authentic as possible.
