ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH

Taken c.1900, Walpi, Arizona, United States
(The Huntington Digital Library / Frederick Monsen Ethnographic Indian Photographs)

"Monsen was one of several photographers operating at the turn of the century in this part of America, alongside his more famous contemporary Edward S. Curtis. Walpi ('Place of the Notch') is a Hopi village in what is now Arizona that has been continuously inhabited for over a thousand years. Pictured is Kauowena, who according to the caption was the oldest woman in Walpi–the unnamed child is separated by four generations. As ever, traditional dress is difficult to research but the distinct twill pattern on the child is very similar to the Pusal'hoya, a baby boy's blanket. I sampled the building plaster from contemporary colour photographs of the village."

Original Caption

"Hopiland. Arizona. Kauowena, the oldest woman in Walpi. There are four generations between the old woman and the child. The Hopi are a healthy people judging from the number of very old people to be found among them."
